Cost and chemistry – these were the two factors which Dennis was heavily considering when he and his wife were looking for an interior designer.

We catch up with Dennis and get him to share more about his resort style home which was achieved at a reasonable budget of $36,000.

Qanvast: Tell us about your search for the right interior designer.

Dennis (D): We met about ten interior design firms as we wanted to find one who offered their services at a reasonable rate and with which we had chemistry with.

We were also looking out for firms which could deliver quality carpentry. After considering all these factors, we found that Tan Studio best fit the bill.

Qanvast: Share with us about the inspiration behind your home design.

D: We wanted a resort style home with lots of wood elements. After a long day at work, we want a home which is cosy and which we can unwind in.

Qanvast: What were some interesting designs which Delson created for your home?

D: We wanted to conceal the bomb shelter with a shoe cabinet and Delson designed one which is spacious enough to store all our shoes. The cabinets are also designed in such a way that my wife has space to sit down to put on her shoes.

Delson also came up with an interesting design for the cabinet which stores my Coca-Cola collectibles.

Qanvast: Tell us about the design of your walk-in wardrobe.

D: In addition to the closets which store our clothes, Delson did up this island for us to store our sunglasses, watches and belts. We really like the design of the accessory island.

Qanvast: How did Delson help you to keep the costs of the renovation down?

D: Delson went out of his way by making a trip to Malaysia to help us to purchase the ceiling fan which costs cheaper in Malaysia than in Singapore.

He also advised us to purchase some of the furnishings – like the switches – from external vendors as it would be cheaper than getting them from his contact.

Qanvast: What was some practical renovation advice which Delson gave you?

D: He advised us not to hack the door which leads into our walk-in wardrobe. Instead, he suggested constructing a false wall so that if we decide to sell our house in future, the original door is still in place.
