Renovation Nightmare
verified-reviewVerified Review

Reviewed by Jessica・Submitted 30 Dec 2020・ Project completed Dec 2020・Designer Gwen

I selected Beaux Monde after speaking to and comparing various proposals from quite a number of ID firms. The project started okay, Gwen was able to conceptualise the design I wanted and made useful suggestions to improve the design - which was also why I went with her in the end. However, my renovation nightmare began once the actual renovation started. Renovation actually started in January 2019, with many hiccups. First, the HDB hacking permit took months to be settled and whenever I checked in with Gwen, there was always something wrong with the ID firm's submission to HDB, thus requiring many resubmissions. On the first day when works were supposed to start, Gwen was late and the workers who arrived on time did not know what to do. Initially, I wasn't provided with a proper schedule of the breakdown of works to be done. There were constantly delays to the schedule even after I requested for a formal schedule, and very little initiative on Gwen's part to update me unless I chased her about the progress. What was supposed to be a 3-4 month renovation with a planned completion by March 2020 just kept dragging and when Covid-19 hit, only my tiling was done (requiring all of 3 months just for what was a straightforward job). When work resumed in July, there was severe manpower issues and while I can understand the challenge in securing various workers to continue with the renovation because of Covid-19, Gwen could have done a lot better in keeping on top of the works to be done and reassuring me about progress. Instead, I found myself constantly checking in and she wasn't able to provide satisfactory responses to what her company's plans were if they were unable to secure their previous workers. The same unprofessional behaviour persisted when works finally resumed properly, with little initiative on her part to keep me updated. The last few weeks of the renovation was a true nightmare - I had initially gone with engaging an ID because I wanted the convenience of having someone oversee and project-manage the renovation. But many a times, Gwen wasn't onsite and I had to be there myself to oversee the works. Workmanship was also poor and I had to request for rectifications many a times, for instance, the touchup painting was very slipshod with chips and patches on my walls, and spots unpainted even when the touchup was supposedly 'done'. I had a lot of built in carpentry which were left with bits of paints - I presumed the painters did not bother to cover up when they did the repainting. Towards the end of the renovation, I discovered even more slips in the renovation, just to name the more serious ones - my gas pipe was left hanging in my kitchen cabinet and not connected to my stove, there was no electric point near my DB box area to connect to my modem even though I was initially advised by Gwen that was a suitable place for my modem, my gas heater was damaged and I only discovered it after the house was handed back to me, I had to arrange for my own cleaning services because the workers that Gwen promised would do the general cleaning never did turn up. All in all, it was a horrifying renovation process when the punctuality, professionalism and workmanship of the ID firm were major issues. What I couldn't accept was that when I raised my feedback to Gwen, there were often a lot of excuses, i.e. I had a ceiling leak issue which added to the delay, on top of the Covid-19 situation, but independent of all that, I found Gwen and her company to be largely irresponsible and unprofessional in managing my project, especially when their core business is supposed to be helping homeowners with their renovation as an ID firm.

Disappointing workmanship, various delays
verified-reviewVerified Review

Reviewed by DP・Submitted 23 Jan 2020・ Project completed Aug 2019・Designer G***

We were very pleased with the designs that the designer came up for us and their showroom workmanship looks really good. But went work is suppose to start, we didnt expect it to be such a huge difference. 1. Day of start work gets delay - requested to start work on 01/10/18 and agreed upon and when confirming again on 30/09/18 than was inform that their hacker couldnt do it and have to wait few more days. 2. Carpentry installation get delayed - agreed on 25/03/18 but only delivered on 27/03/18 for kitchen and living, bed room was even later 3. Floor tiles grouting workmanship was unacceptable. We agreed on the color that the designer and tiler blended to match the floor tiles, but when the house was handed over to us, the grouting turned from beige to orangey. They claim it was due to chemical wash that the color changed. Do they not know that's the outcome if they were to do chemical wash or putting too much chemical for the wash? Some of our carpentry was installed before the grouting was touched up therefore if we were to ever dismantle the carpentry, the grouting would be different from the rest of the house. This is an example of poor coordination. Oh, ours was a resale 5RM HDB and the area was bigger than normal BTO but they only got 1 Malaysian guy to do the whole house, save cost? 4. Charged to remove door frame and make good - dismantled the door frame, but didnt smoothen it. Patches that cannot even be covered with paint. Even left a hack off patch and didnt touch up. Refer to pic Overall, we had a hard time getting updates and to be frank we will never engage them again. We made the final payment on 07/08/19 and till date (23/01/20), we have yet to receive the agreement. ID claims to need to speak to superior on certain points as the agreement was not what we agreed upon, but till date, no news. Refer to picture for poor workmanship, esp on floor grouting. Since they couldnt keep to the beige color that blends witht he floor tiles, we agreed to change to white, but still the grouting was uneven. When walking, you can feel the grouting line unevenness, some even higher than the tiles. Some grouting are having "holes" in between while mostly, the lines are not straight. For kitchen top and bottom cabinet, they were not aligned, and we did make it clear to ID that we will be doing a bifold door. But when we ask for an explanation, they said it was due to structure issue (so we blame HDB), but yet, didnt they carpenter take proper measurement? Refer to pic for the difference between top and bottom cabinet. Overall, we had a hard time getting updates and if you think you have lots of time and energy to be chasing and monitoring the work yourself, hire at your own risk. Even the manager try to brush our feedback off.

Highly Recommend Billy from Beaux Monde

I am really thankful to Billy who has helped me throughout this otherwise-really stressful process. Billy has shouldered most of the stress so i didn't have to and I really appreciate that. He's very reliable, responsible and highly responsive throughout this process. He's incredibly helpful and has gone the extra miles on multiple occasions to help me get what I want for my unit and for that i'm truly grateful. He's easy to work with; like you've gained a friend at the end of the day. He always keeps his cool no matter what happens and is patient to answer any questions I might have at any point in time. When i have any requests to change something (because i sometimes change my mind along the way), he would be prompt to help make the necessary amendments and i appreciate his professionalism. Lastly, I just want to mention that the workmanship is great too! Everything was done within budget and timeline. I would highly recommend Billy to anyone who is looking to do their renovation work in a heart beat.

Billy was creative and gave us alot of fresh ideas for our home. We spoke to several designers but weren't really satisfied with their concept. Throughout the whole process, Billy was very responsive to our queries and gave many useful suggestions. We could really feel his enthusiasm! There were many occasions when we changed our design concepts and ideas but he managed to tune the end product to satisfy both myself and my wife.

Goes the extra mile to lessen your stress!

Reviewed by Lee Sai Hong・Submitted 17 Mar 2019・ Project completed Oct 2018・Designer Billy Chong

I found Beaux Monde’s advert on Carousell. At first, there weren’t many reviews at all there, and I wasn’t too sure. We needed our kitchen renovation to be completed in as quick a time as possible as we hoped for my mom to have home-cooked food to eat due to health reasons, and wanted to minimize eating out/tingkat etc. We hoped that we could find a designer-contractor who could help us with these requirements and understand our situation. After brief chatting with Billy via Carousell, and thereafter meeting him face to face, I sensed that he was very sincere about helping us and understood our situation. He genuinely cared about our requirements and reassured us that he would try his best to discuss with his demolition, carpentry and electricity teams to accelerate the process of the renovation. We are so glad and relieved we went ahead with Billy to do our kitchen renovation. He was really true to his word and went all out to go the extra mile for us! All throughout the process, Billy was very polite, and easy to communicate with via WhatsApp. Whether it was day or night, he always could be contacted, and he always was polite, friendly, and he is very quick-thinking. He can understand what you are trying to convey to him and he has good memory. He has many good ideas that are creative, practical, and he helps you think of how to save money as well. He is honest and polite in helping you around your budget, and shares with you details about the materials to choose, and let’s you decide. He is always very respectful towards your decisions and he shares his opinions candidly too. Thus working with him is relaxing and fun. I think this is a very rare quality in a designer. Never once did he lose his cool, and he was never impatient. His carpentry, electric and demolition team are also very friendly and nice people. They were diligent, quick at working, and their workmanship is fine quality too. If there was a need for rectification, Billy was very quick to make arrangements and work around the schedule each time. All in all, the demolition, carpentry, electric was done in very miraculous timing, and the whole process was reassuring and pleasant. Billy really did his best to help us throughout the process. We are so blessed to have come across him to handle our kitchen renovation for us! We are so thankful to Billy and his team. We strongly recommend him to others. If you want a pleasant experience for any renovation work, do yourself a favor and choose Billy and his team!

Krey was a delight to work with. He was prompt in getting back to us. Regardless of the time, Krey would always be contactable. We had a pleasant experience working with him because he is detailed, responsible and would not go MIA on us. He was transparent about pricing, kept to our budget and despite some delays here and there, we were also able to complete the renovation on time. As first-time home owners, we were able to trust Krey to handle everything. His colour coordination sense was really good. We gave him a theme, explained our idea and he was able to come up with the colour scheme. When choosing colours and laminate designs, Krey was proactive and he helped to shortlist 3 that he felt would be a good match. We could even trust Krey to choose the colour of our furnitures. Krey also gave practical advice. While we did not make any major changes or rectifications during the renovation, Krey was very accommodating towards us and even waived any additional charges incurred from the minor rectifications/changes. When Krey brought us to shop for fittings and appliances, he was not 'pushy'. He did not pressure us and allowed us to choose we really liked/wanted, even if it meant that we did not buy from his supplier. His carpentry and tiling team really went the extra mile for us as well! I felt that the most outstanding quality about Krey is his ability to listen and understand what his clients truly want. He would put himself in his client's shoes and make suggestions and recommendations based on that. When it came to the theme of the house, we had a consensus and at times when I "stray" from my concept, he would always be there to remind me so that we would not deviate too far from our conceptualised interior design. He was professional in that sense and he stood by his design proudly. I prefer and appreciate his pride and confidence in his work, rather than giving in blindly to every whims and demands of the customer. Without Krey, my dream home would not have materialised.

Syazreen Aida (Syaz) is our interior designer from Beaux Monde. Syaz has helped us from the design and conceptualisation to the choice pieces of furniture for our home. During the pre-renovation process, Syaz has gone out of her way to create a few looks in her proposal and was detailed in her drawings. Syaz’s tenacity assures us that she will ensure everything will go smoothly. This was one of the main reasons why we engage her. During consultations, Syaz listened earnestly to what we want. Having our best interests at heart, Syaz will advise us if our choice of materials or design may not be aesthetically pleasing. That is what we love so much about her! She is honest with her opinions and will provide us with alternatives. During the renovation process, Syaz was prompt in updating the progress of the renovation works and quick to rectifying any faults. She is always there whenever there is a need to make choices such as for the tiles and fittings; always advising us on the best options. Her depth of knowledge on such matters is indeed commendable. Her customer service is excellent. Syaz also did the styling for our home, making it even more opulence with her impeccable taste in furniture. Not forgetting the times where she helped to wait for our deliveries and even liaise with them. Syaz has not only captured our hearts with her work ethics but also her sincerity in truly giving the best to her clients. Syaz is a gem and we would recommend her to anyone when you visit Beaux Monde.

I started looking for an ID for my 2 room flat n contacted a few companies n most were reluctant as it was a small flat n I need the reno to be done quick. Billy was the only one who bothered to come to my office to meet me immediately. He listened to what I want n at times giving suggestions if it is not feasible. He supervised the renovation closely n will apps me photos of the progress as I can only visit the flat during weekends or after hours. He is also willing to rectify anything which is not to my satisfaction. He does have his short comings but all in I am pretty happy with the outcome and the workmanship is good.
