7 Duplex Condos in Singapore with DOUBLE the Wow Factor

Two cool to be single (storey).

Only 17% of Singapore’s residents live in condos, and this number becomes even smaller when you narrow it down to those living in double-storey (AKA duplex) units. Extra space aside, the fact that they’re so rare only makes duplex condos even more coveted.

From penthouses in Jurong West to posh apartments in prime areas like Novena, let’s take a peek at what these duplex condos look like on the inside:

1. This transitional style duplex condo at Aljunied with a picturesque foyer and stairwell

First impressions count, and this two-storey apartment designed by Forefront Interior makes a strong one.

Upon entry, you’ll be greeted by an era-ambiguous foyer that’s a mix of modern and traditional influences (AKA transitional style), serving as a teaser to its true centrepiece: a spiral stairwell in a bold jet black.

This contrast of black fittings against the backdrop of white/cream surfaces continues in areas like the kitchen and bathroom, arresting your sight at every turn — but in an oddly calming manner with its nostalgic nods to yesteryear.

Further in, the master bedroom takes a softer, contemporary approach with shades of grey, botanical wallpaper and panelled wardrobe doors that extend to conceal the ensuite’s entrance.

It may likewise have a spiral stairwell, but this next apartment exudes a completely different vibe. Here, the owners decided to go with an open concept for the lower floor to keep it bright and airy, along with railings in place of solid sides for the stairwell.

Heading upstairs, the master bedroom retains a contemporary look with a cove light headboard and reflective surfaces to bring a hotel-like experience to its owners.

You may have noticed that each floor of this unit isn’t exactly large. But as a duplex, the owners are able to fit in features they otherwise wouldn’t, like a walk-in wardrobe. Because, really, is there such a thing as having too many clothes?

3. This sloped-roof penthouse in Kembangan you might mistake for a home overseas

At twice the size of a 5-room BTO, this penthouse has a communal area that can comfortably host large gatherings, complete with full-height flat-fronted cabinets to accentuate its size.

On the upper floor, the master bedroom likewise takes on a clean, minimalist look. Meanwhile, the walk-in wardrobe once again features cabinets that extend all the way to the ceiling — but this time with glass panels for that contemporary luxe appeal.

An interesting feature of this unit, though, is that its ensuite has an angled ceiling which would typically make a space seem smaller. Given how it’s objectively large, though, we’d say this sloped roof adds even more character to the penthouse.

All in all, this definitely isn’t your average apartment in Singapore.

4. This Scandi-themed penthouse at Bukit Gombak that’s large yet homey

Scandi homes sometimes get accused of being “basic”; this one is anything but.

For one, it comes at a whopping 327sqm, which is 3 times the size of an average HDB flat!

To match its spiral stairwell, the owners decided to go with curved furnishings at every turn, from sofas (yes, plural) to the dry pantry island. Along with light wood tones, these curves help to soften the space, adding a sense of homey cosiness despite its sheer size.

Another recurring motif you’ll find is that of references to nature. Along with overt ones like that of houseplants, abstract references include an asymmetrical headboard that represents ocean waves, and the warm orange spotlight in the living room earlier to mimic a setting sun.

With this level of thought that went into its design, “basic” wouldn’t be one of the words we’d use to describe this penthouse alright.

5. This family’s penthouse at Jurong West that looks like a beach villa in Bali

It’s not possible to be on a perpetual holiday, but you can recreate resort vibes at home to always feel like you’re on one. Featuring solid wood and rattan furnishings, natural stone and a breakfast counter, this penthouse is reminiscent of Bali’s beach villa, especially with its high ceiling and staircase in the middle.

In fact, the theme continues even in the kids’ playroom, with rattan furniture and a mosquito net you often find in tropical resorts.

So, don’t ever believe the lie that you can’t have an aesthetic home if you have kids!

Replete with pastels, soft furnishings, wainscoting details and floral wallpaper on the ceiling, this penthouse in Bukit Timah looks like something that popped out of a fairytale.

But as a modern take on a classical look, it’s designed on the canvas of white walls, clean lines and a faux fireplace (that is, a TV).

Upstairs, the primary suite is no less dreamy, with an elongated master bedroom befitting a princess, and a unique alternative to a bathroom door: blush curtains behind an arched walkway, like that of a luxury boutique’s dressing room.

Ending things off with a bang, this opulent duplex condo in Novena gives us a peek into the lives of (actual) Crazy Rich Asians here in Singapore.

With best-in-class materials and fittings all around (think natural stone and chandeliers), it’s also got a private lift and an amazing view from its double-height windows that leave nothing to be desired.

Needless to say, being a duplex doubles the wow factor, particularly when you have a second living area on the upper floor and a master suite that’s the size of an entire shoebox apartment.
