Toa Payoh Ridge homeowners, it’s almost time!
Located a stone’s throw away from Braddell and Caldecott MRT stations, Toa Payoh Ridge is as well-connected as public housing comes. For those who will soon call this estate home (or if you’re just curious), here’s a refresher on everything you can expect:
- Roof gardens with viewing decks
- A 3-storey social community facility that will house childcare centres, a residents’ committee centre, and more
- Close proximity to notable schools including Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary), CHIJ Primary and Secondary School (Toa Payoh), and Marymount Convent School
- Close proximity to two neighbourhood centres
Amenities aside, here’s another thing in the pipeline: your renovation. While there is still some time before your key collection date, it never hurts to start planning your renovation now.
If you don’t know what you want or are stuck for ideas – well, we’ve got you covered with these curated design ideas based on your specific property type and layout:
Design ideas for a 2-room BTO flat at Toa Payoh Ridge
Overview
- Kitchen connecting directly to living room
- Possibility of an open-concept kitchen
- Type 2 has an additional 10 sqm of living/dining space
a) An elegant home with practical ideas for a small space
While many 2-room BTO layouts you see these days separate the kitchen from the living room for a galley-style look, the 2-room units at Toa Payoh Ridge are perfect for an open-concept look and feel.
This might be a condo unit, but the open-concept spirit of the renovation is the same: the half-glass wall of the semi-open kitchen separates it from the dining area, while still letting you keep an eye on what’s going on in the living area.
It lets light through too, to keep the space bright and feeling open.
Plus, if you cook often, having the option to close it off prevents cooking fumes from spreading all around the house.
Compared to the rest of the home, which makes a rather luxe statement with glossy, veined surfaces and grand lighting fixtures, the bedroom pares it back with soft furnishings for a more soothing vibe.
And the vanity slotted neatly in the small nook beside the bed is a great example of how you can make the most of every space.
And if you peek into the bathroom, you’ll find that the vanity is suspended above the ground – a choice that serves to make the space feel more open visually.
Besides that, the mirror here doubles as the vanity cabinet door, with under-cabinet lighting for a hotel-like feel.
b) A home that plays with colour and clever design features
The formula to making a small home look bigger isn’t necessarily to paint all the walls white.
Case in point: this resale HDB, with the entryway painted a bold green for a striking first impression.
While the layout of this 47 sqm home might be rather different from that of Toa Payoh Ridge 2-room flats, there are plenty of ideas you can add to your home renovation.
For one, the household shelter door, which most of us find unsightly, was simply concealed with a colour that matches the surrounding walls – no carpentry necessary.
Head into the living room and the all-white colour scheme creates a sharp contrast that visually opens up the space and creates a relaxing atmosphere.
While Type 1 flats might have too limited a space for this, those of you with Type 2 flats can even consider additional storage or a hidden bookshelf like so, and use sliding doors to save on swing space.
The kitchen, meanwhile, features a matching green colour scheme and a simple countertop space with a hanging rack to air dry laundry.
Not only does it look great (because it blends in with the surrounding green), but it’s also a handy spot for folding clothes.

Design ideas for a 3-room BTO flat at Toa Payoh Ridge
Overview
- Combined kitchen/service yard space for flexibility
- No possibility of open-concept kitchen as the household shelter is in front of it
- Structural wall between master bedroom and junior bedroom can be hacked
a) An angular home filled with warm, wood tones and hidden doors
From the moment you set eyes on this home, it’s clear that it’s no ordinary 3-room flat. There’s the angular entrance to the kitchen, for one, though it is tempered by curves for a natural flow that leads to the living area.
The living area – though simple – is a mix of soft furnishings, a cushy leather sofa and the warm wood tones of the TV feature wall done up with moulding to add depth.
Not all is as it seems in this home, because the extended edge of the TV feature wall doubles as a concealed doorway to the corridor!
Once open, you’ll feel like you’re looking down a long corridor – an effect that is amplified by the soft off-white palette used across the stretch to visually elongate it, and the mirror at the end that creates the illusion of a separate space.
If you thought there isn’t much you can do with a 3-room flat, this home will make you think again!

b) A moody home with an industrial touch and a dry bar
No open-concept kitchen? No problem – at least, for the owners of this home, who didn’t mind taking up some of the living room space to build a dry bar right at the entrance of the kitchen.
If you love hosting, this gives you the convenience of serving your guests while you’re in the living area, plus some storage for your appliances.
Of course, we can’t neglect to mention the moody vibes you get with the dark, muted tones and soft, ambient light. We, for one, love the standing lamp in the living area!

a) A serene home that might give you major dining room envy
This 4-room flat embodies a serene aesthetic, with limewash walls and curved features that add to its textured, organic feel. To add to that, it’s done up with ambient light instead of harsh downlights for a tranquil atmosphere.
The heart of the home is undoubtedly the two-tiered dining island that works as both a worktop for food prep and a cosy spot for meals.
Just behind it, there’s a dry pantry with more countertop space and floating shelves to display memorabilia.
If you’re worried about your household shelter looking like an eyesore right at the entrance of your home, cover it up with carpentry. You could even make room for a recessed niche with power outlets and storage/display space like so – a neat spot to drop your keys off at too!
If you don’t need to have all the rooms intact for future-proofing, hack down the non-structural part of the wall between your master bedroom and adjacent junior bedroom for a walk-in wardrobe – and a study, if you fancy.

b) An airy, transitional home with a healthy dose of green
Without a bulky household shelter in the way for this 4-room layout, you’ve got room for a more spacious entryway and a sleek, storage cabinet for shoes that doesn’t take too much space.
For added privacy – since the main door looks right into the living room – the owners went with a built-in rattan partition that obscures the view from nosy neighbours/passers-by, while still letting light and a cooling breeze through when the door is open.
A strip of green visually demarcates the dining area, while the rest of the space is dressed in wainscoting that fills the home with Victorian charm.
The master bedroom sports a similar look, along with a platform bed with LED strip lighting. This mix of traditional and modern elements gives it a distinctly transitional look.
The bathroom completes the home’s theme, with black-and-white checkerboard tiles and green accents that mirror the same colours you find in the living room.
Considering that Toa Payoh Ridge is inspired by hills and hilltops (i.e. greenery), we’d say this is a rather fitting idea to consider!
