Geek Paradise Found: 5 Homes That Went ALL OUT with Their Themes

Taking ‘young at heart’ to the next level.

We’ve all got an inner geek in us that would very much like to use our home as a form of escapism.

And we’re not talking about a mere display shelf of action figures. We’re talking about completely transforming your home to incorporate bold, thematic ideas.

Can’t quite picture what we mean? Here are some of our favourites that will take you to a whole other world:

A Sci-Fi spaceship-themed bedroom

Team Star Wars or Star Trek, we can all agree that the interior designer for this 3-bedder condo in Geylang understood the assignment. Juxtaposing a regimental-like greyscale interior with vibrant RGB lighting, the resemblance of this spaceship-themed bedroom to a Sci-Fi movie set is uncanny.

From its LED-framed door to its bunk bed with an aluminum platform ladder, indoor window and ‘stars’ overhead, no detail was left out in committing to the theme.

And just in case you’re wondering: the round appliance mounted on the ceiling isn’t a fake CCTV camera. It is, in fact, a short throw projector that affords the owners an immersive movie-watching experience without taking up any floor space.

Now this is the kind of room we’d want to watch a Sci-Fi movie in.

An elegant 'House of Mouse' themed home

Adopting a symbolic rather than an overt approach, this 4-room resale flat in Serangoon pays homage to Mickey Mouse through the use of shapes and colours that reference the iconic Disney character.

This applies to features both large and small, from the red-and-yellow sliding doors in the living room that serve as callbacks to Mickey’s red shorts and yellow shoes, to the bespoke kitchen cabinet pull handles in the shape of Mickey’s face.

And while there are references that are more overt and functional – like a custom decal on the common bathroom’s frosted glass door – others such as the ‘mouse hole’ to the master bedroom have been included purely as a playful take on the theme.

The result: a fun but elegant interior that will stand the test of time.

A nostalgic Pac-Man-themed BTO

This one’s for the ‘80s and ‘90s kids. Instead of merely playing Pac-Man at the arcade, this 5-room BTO at Punggol Waterway takes you into the scene of the game itself.

As with the other homes in this list, many of its thematic features serve practical purposes as well. Take for instance the circular wall niche in the living that promotes ventilation, or the concrete settee for putting shoes on. Cute? Check. Functional? Also check.

In our opinion, though, the beauty of this project lies in how simple elements such as mosaic tiles as well as the use of basic geometry and primary colours (or at least, the Pac-Man variants of them) can come together to achieve such a strong, coherent theme.

In fact, one might even go so far to say that they pack quite the punch, pun intended.

A BTO flat with an ‘armoury’ for a corridor

If gaming references aren’t enough and you’d much rather get into the thick of the (actual) action, this 4-room BTO at Buangkok will certainly do the trick!

Bored at home? Pick one of many locked-and-loaded NERF guns along the corridor and let your inner child run wild.

Granted, the clean up probably won’t be as fun (especially if you’re hosting a NERF tournament with friends) – but hey, that’s a small price to pay to reminisce your childhood amidst all the adulting you’d have to do!

And… why have wall sconces when you can have lightsabers instead?

And to end off this list, a home that’s ready for the end of the world

Canberra Street by erstudio

Not for the faint of heart, this 4-room BTO at Canberra has a high level of grit to it – a post-apocalyptic kind of high.

Taking the industrial aesthetic to an extreme, it uses crates for a sofa, exposed bricks for a kitchen counter, and two-toned cement screeding for an intentionally worn-out look.

Further in, the study sports a red, white and black aesthetic like that of an emergency outpost, while the master bedroom features sheer drapery that’s typical of post-apocalyptic movies.

All in all, there’s no question that the owners and designer pulled all stops to bring this theme to life.

The only question that remains is: would you stay here?
