Every dream home begins with an idea.
Scored a MacPherson Blossom Selective En bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS) flat under the July 2025 Sale of Balance exercise? Congratulations!
You’ve probably just chosen or will be choosing your unit in the coming weeks. Either way, your flat is already built, which means it’s time to kickstart your renovation planning.
Design ideas for 2-room flats at MacPherson Blossom
Floorplans of 2-room Type 1 (left) and Type 2 (right) flats at MacPherson Blossom
Overview
- Type 1 units have the kitchen facing the main entrance
- Type 2 units have the bedroom, living area, and kitchen side-by-side, with the possibility of an open-concept kitchen and/or studio apartment setup
- Type 2 units have a larger bedroom and living area, accounting for an additional 9sqm
a) Ditch traditional bedroom walls for glass

You can’t change the physical size of your 2-room flat, but there are a few design tricks to make it look more spacious.
Drawing inspiration from this 1-bedder condo, consider partitioning your bedroom with glass, in place of a traditional drywall and door. Doing so will allow you to see the entire breadth of your flat (a la swanky studio apartments) while keeping each area separate.

Then, install curtains for an added layer of privacy when needed, like when you have guests over, if your partner is watching TV in the living room.
Other design tricks include a false ceiling with downlights for a sleek, streamlined look, as well as a TV feature wall that extends all the way to the ceiling for an illusion of height. While you’re at it, we recommend pairing these with a low-height sofa, coffee table and TV console to further accentuate the illusion.
b) Go all out with a ryokan-meets-cabin theme

But of course, we’d understand if you prefer having walls to separate each space. If so, consider decking the entire apartment in wood finishes, like this 2-room BTO with a floorplan resembling that of Type 2 units at MacPherson Blossom.

Here, lattice doors with privacy glass are a modern take on traditional Japanese shoji doors. Combined with the parquet-look flooring and ceiling beams in similar warm wood tones, they cocoon you in as a cabin in the Alps would.

Since the owners don’t watch TV, the standard TV-and-sofa setup was done away with, making room for a half-height shelf and a sizeable dining area for hosting guests.
In the kitchen, a simple breakfast counter with bar stools is used for light meals and morning coffee. A chill spot every home should have, if you ask us.
Design ideas for 3-room flats at MacPherson Blossom
Floorplans for 3-room flats at MacPherson Blossom
Overview
- Location of the household shelter will depend on the unit you get
- An open kitchen is only possible for units with the floorplan on the right
- In either case, you have the freedom to merge the junior bedroom with the living area and/or the master bedroom
a) Convert the junior bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe, but make it future-proof
View this project by Quad.R Design
For many young adults, having a walk-in wardrobe feels like a dream come true. But if you’re moving into a 3-room flat, we wouldn’t recommend merging your bedrooms just to achieve this.
That is, unless you’re absolutely sure you don’t plan to have kids or have any other use for the junior bedroom in future.

Instead, take a leaf from this 3-room flat’s book, where the junior bedroom was kept separate, ready to be transformed into a kids’ bedroom or home office at a moment’s notice.
For now, with just a floor-to-ceiling cabinet built in, it’s the ultimate multipurpose walk-in wardrobe — one that can also be used for morning workouts or game nights with friends.

Side note: From a bay window settee to the use of natural materials like rattan and wicker, we’re really digging the home’s resort vibes.
b) Turn it into a glitzy, contemporary ‘condo’

You’re not allowed to modify your flat’s household shelter, but you can conceal it so it doesn’t stick out like an eyesore — particularly if it’s located right next to your main entrance.
In this Toa Payoh flat, a combination of full-height mirrors and strip lights was used to complement the rest of the living room’s glossy surfaces and accent lighting. The result: a posh, condo-looking space that appears larger than it actually is.

Don’t stop at the living room though, as a key principle in good design is that of continuity. Commit to the same contemporary theme in your bedroom, where a full-height cabinet can be used to partition the rest area and the bathroom, all while serving as a walk-in wardrobe with no hacking required.

Speaking of the bathroom, you could use marble-look tiles that resemble your dining table’s sintered stone top, likewise lending a sense of cohesion across the different rooms.
Design ideas for 4-room flats at MacPherson Blossom
Floorplan of a 4-room flat at MacPherson Blossom
Overview
- All 4-room units follow the same floorplan; some units have a communal area that’s 5sqm larger
- Non-obstructive positions of structural walls allows for multiple permutations of layout reconfiguration
a) Adopt an open-plan layout if you have a bedroom to spare
View this project by Inizio Atelier
Referencing this Northshore BTO, one possible layout reconfiguration for 4-room units at MacPherson Blossom is to merge the living room with the adjacent junior bedroom.

Here, the latter is converted into a dedicated dining area that can comfortably seat 6-8 pax, opening up to the kitchen as well as the rest of the XL communal area.
Design-wise, we love how it balances a luxe hotel-look with a homey cosiness brought about by choice accents and furnishings, as well as curved edges and layered lighting.

And since this would make the communal area really open, you may wish to separate the private areas by concealing the corridor entrance.
b) Merge the master bedroom and adjacent junior bedroom to form a master suite
View this project by SG Interior Design
Alternatively (or concurrently), get yourself a massive master suite by knocking down the walls between your master bedroom and the adjacent bedroom.
That said, they may still be separated with a sliding door (or French fold doors, if you prefer something fancier) so you don’t disturb your other half’s beauty sleep while getting ready in the morning or working late into the night.

In this example, the bed is placed where the original junior bedroom used to be. The original master bedroom area is then used as a study-cum-walk-in-wardrobe, which makes perfect sense for getting ready after you come out of the shower.
Plus, there’s also a sneaky design trick the ID included: concealing the en suite bathroom entrance with a full-height mirror.
Design ideas for 5-room flats at MacPherson Blossom
Floorplan of a 5-room flat at MacPherson Blossom
Overview
- All 5-room units follow the same floorplan
- Non-obstructive positions of structural walls allows for multiple permutations of layout reconfiguration
a) Build a glass-enclosed entertainment room
View this project by Fifth Avenue Interior
If you don’t require a dedicated study in your 5-room flat, there are other ways to utilise the suggested study area’s square footage.
View this project by Fifth Avenue Interior
For instance, if movies or gaming are a huge thing in your household, have your spare bedroom take up some of that living room room. Then, use it as a spacious entertainment room, but replace its walls with glass partitions so that light can pass and noise is contained within.
As per HDB’s suggested layout, the dining area can then be between this entertainment room and the kitchen — which we’d recommend keeping open if you’re going after an airy vibe for your home.

b) Merge your (elongated) kitchen with the service yard
View this project by Attic Studio Interiors
Not keen on hacking down walls/a layout reconfiguration? No problem. Keep the bedroom-living room boundary as is, then carve out a space within the living room for a home gym, hobby room, or anything really.
View this project by Attic Studio Interiors
However, we would recommend a slight layout change that involves removing the HDB-provided partition between your kitchen and service yard, particularly because your unit comes with an elongated kitchen.
Visually, having a continuous stretch of carpentry across both spaces will make the area look much larger than it already is.
Practically, you’d be able to fully maximise that ‘in-between’ space with more storage cabinets — or even a floor-to-ceiling one like in the example above! The only downside we can think of is that you’ll have to avoid hanging your laundry whenever cooking is in progress, but one well worth the trade-off.
