Qanvast: What was your idea behind the renovation?
Elvan (E): We wanted something cosy and comfortable using warm lights, and we like the modern hotel look. We upgraded from a smaller HDB to a bigger one for the kids to run around and grow up in hence the new place should be more open.
After looking through the portfolios of several interior designers, we definitely didn't want the typical “Scandinavian” or industrial style that everyone else is doing. Chris' design portfolio stood out for us and when we met up him, he had really fresh and interesting ideas. That was the main reason why we decided to go with him.
Qanvast: What did Chris do to achieve the look?
E: Chris hacked away the store room and third bedroom and managed to create a bigger space for the living room for kids to play and for hosting guests. The kitchen was also converted to open concept.
Qanvast: Was it challenging to renovate an old apartment?
E: It was, there were plenty of challenges and we had a couple of surprises. For example, the gas pipes weren't working even though the rewiring had been done.
There were also some delays from the HDB side as well when it came to the second compressor for our air-conditioner.
Qanvast: What do you love most about your place?
E: My bedroom. As I am doing shift work, I requested for a dark and cosy room so that I can sleep well during the day.
Qanvast: Share with us your experience working with Chris.
E: He's really creative - even with the renovation works underway, he was still sharing his ideas. One thing that we liked was that while he does throw out a lot of suggestions, he doesn’t bombard us or make us feel overwhelmed with endless possibilities; He would guide us in making decisions as well.
He’s also meticulous, going down to great lengths in choosing the colour palette for us and 90% of the time, we liked what he has chosen. He is very efficient in his work and managed to accommodate our needs and wants.
