A renovation process with Starry Homestead
verified-reviewVerified Review

Reviewed by Lu Si Meng・Submitted 3 Mar 2020・Project completed Jan 2020・Designer Lamont Tan

I bought a resale 4-bedroom HDB in 2019 and in the interim of waiting for the transaction to complete, I started to browse the internet and look at pictures of completed renovation works and reviews of interior design firms in terms of their professionalism, pricing, etc. I had a vague idea of wanting a “farmhouse” theme and my research was mainly looking at completed works on that.

I came across works by Starry Homestead on social media like Qanvast and eventually saw more of their works on their Facebook/Instagram. It was coincident that there was a roadshow and I went to the roadshow just to speak to them although there were other firms around. The interior designer whom I met that day was Mr Lamont Tan from Starry Homestead. I came prepared with my own drawings and spent a long time explaining to Lamont what I wanted. He patiently took notes and when unclear, he would ask question. During that session, he also explained the special renovation package prices offered for the road show.

We had a few more meetings after that first meeting. During those subsequent meetings, Lamont did a schedule and he explained the processes that he would go through with me, such as sketch ups, perspectives, layout finalization as I had removed and added walls, paint colours, tiles selection, cabinetry design, laminate selection, etc. On my end, I would feed him information on the kitchen appliances and sanitary wares and fittings which I would procure to enable him to prepare the drawings. During the renovation, as I shopped for light fittings, loose furniture and cabinet handles, I would also seek Lamont’s opinion.

When I finally got the keys and the renovation started, there were even more discussions with Lamont such as where I wanted the lighting and power point layouts, how the trunking for the air-conditioning pipeworks were to be routed, how the tile setting out was to be done, at what height should the sanitary wares and fittings be mounted, what kind of height for the kitchen counter top, etc.

Through the entire process, Lamont is responsible and helpful and was always trying his best to advise me or solve problems. He will always respond to my whatapps messages/queries no matter what day or what time.

Now, all the above would also not happen, if the quotation for the proposed renovation work was way beyond my budget. We went through the quotation a few rounds and as the early quotations exceeded my budget, Lamont and I had to work on what to give up and what details to simplify and he also helped to see what else he could help with the costs of some of the items. One classic example of how Lamont helped to reduce the cost was on how the open shelves at the Living area were to be constructed. He discussed with the carpenter and proposed an alternative way to fabricate the open shelves. I accepted the alternative proposal and that helped to reduce the cost for some cabinetry works.

Through the seemingly endless discussion on the design, colour selection and the theme with Lamont, I eventually came to the realization that I was not looking for a “western farmhouse” which is more rustic, I was really looking for a bright, cosy and cheerful “tropical farmhouse” theme with light wood and rattan. In fact, even gearing towards local tropical and a bit of the 南洋 Nanyang accent.

It was not an easy process throughout but I would say I am very pleased with how my new house looks and friends have commented that it looks cosy and they feel comfortable. I thank Lamont for his professionalism and dedication which has made this outcome possible.
