Family condo reno - thanks Yen Ng

Reviewed by David・Submitted 23 Nov 2022・ Project completed Sep 2022・Designer Yen Ng

We are a family of 5 and needed to move in 4 months, after purchasing our relatively large apartment, with a significant renovation required for our long term own stay. We interviewed 5 ID firms and ended up choosing Yen Ng at TIL. The quote was not the cheapest by any means but importantly felt that we could trust them to deliver with innovative vision and understanding of our rather vague ideas or ‘look’, within our time frame to move in. Overall the renovation works process was smooth and Yen and team delivered within a short time line although we had last minute changes and small hiccups. She was particularly responsive in communication, creative, flexible and clear in her design inputs, and overall a cheerful nice person to deal with. I would also commend her good relationship with her contractors that helped a lot in getting the job done during this period of materials and labor shortages. As renovating is a scary process at the beginning, we are happy and relieved that Yen and TIL proved to be a good experience and now at post renovation, she has continued to be responsive to the small fixes and cleanups needed.

Thank You, Emma! (124sqm Tampines)

Reviewed by E M・Submitted 20 Nov 2022・ Project completed Sep 2022・Designer Emma Jin

After spending months sifting through numerous highly-rated ID firms, we eventually contacted 5 firms and met with 4 IDs. Thanks to the all-in attitude and dedication of our amazing ID, Emma Jin, we chose TIL. We came to Emma with rather specific and unusual ideas of how we wanted certain areas of our home to be, at the same time we had absolutely no idea what to do with some other areas. At our first meeting, Emma sat through our proposal and mood board for each room of our home and really listened to what we wanted. She was very practical and upfront from the onset about what could or could not be done, what may or may not be approved by HDB (we were essentially hacking all walls). At the same time, we found her to be truly enthusiastic about and supportive of our design ideas, even though we knew it was a little out of her comfort zone. All this was before we even signed any contract with her or TIL. When Emma proposed her designs to us, we could really imagine ourselves living in a home like that. I think we sort of already knew that we wanted to go with Emma even then. She had applied the concepts and designs we wanted, and in some cases, even improved on them. She had a good balance of aesthetics and functionality. The effort she put in at such an early stage was tangible. We certainly valued her attention to the details that we had mentioned in our first meeting—we did not experience this with the other 3 IDs we had met with. She also patiently fielded lots of questions from us (through WhatsApp, emails and Zoom calls), even during odd hours, and never once rushed us in our decision about whether to sign with TIL or not. Basically, she wasn’t “pushy”. Emma is flexible, open-minded and easy to work with. She was extremely patient with us. For instance, one of the main stumbling blocks we had was with the paint colour we had initially chosen. The resulting colour painted on our walls was totally different from what we had envisioned, but Emma was patient and supportive about us not compromising and settling on a colour we didn't like. We and Emma sourced for the colour we truly wanted, and we absolutely love it now. Emma always wanted us to be happy with our choices. One thing most would probably say about Emma is that she is very responsible and extremely organised. She takes note of EVERYTHING. We were pleasantly surprised when we saw that she even printed and filed all the product specifications of our furniture/appliances, for her own reference. She never failed to remind us of any meetings and was very proactive about updating us on the progress of the renovations every step of the way. She replied promptly to every single query we had and still does so even now, months after our reno has completed. If something went wrong, Emma wouldn't trouble us unnecessarily and would do her best to solve the issue on her own. (Case in point, we didn't know till the last stretch of our reno that Emma had been managing feedback from our neighbours for months!) If an issue required our approval/input, she would provide us with various suggestions (with pictures and videos) on how the issue could be resolved. We even witnessed her problem-solve with her workers on the spot several times. She always managed to strike a good balance between dealing with her workers and us at all times. We understood that things couldn't go as planned all the time and Emma made sure to manage our expectations too. She remained professional when we informed her of any mistakes the workers may have made, and she always followed up and rectified the issues immediately. She's not one to make excuses and is always keen on learning and improving. There are probably a ton of awesome qualities about Emma that we may have missed out, but most importantly, it has truly been a joy working with her. Honestly, we are a very detail-oriented, organised (OCD-ish) and meticulous couple, and we were worried that we wouldn't be able to find an ID that suited our working style, but Emma was the ideal fit. My husband has had negative experiences with every ID he has dealt with, but even he was truly impressed with Emma's management of the project. We could tell that Emma really put her heart into building our home. This was evident as her genuine excitement was palpable every time we celebrated the completion of each reno milestone (the small wins). She was probably as excited as we were when we started filling our house with furniture! We would recommend Emma Jin to anyone in a heartbeat. TIL is incredibly fortunate to have such an awesome person/ID like her!
