13 Creative Wall Decor and Feature Wall Ideas for Every Budget

Ideas to get the wall (ball) rolling.

Walls occupy large surface areas in your interior, and decorating just one of them can go a long way in adding much needed pizzazz to liven up a space.

From precious memories to practical features, simple DIY projects to intricate built-ins, here are some of our favourite ideas for wall decor and feature walls that we’ve seen of late, categorised by how much they’d cost.

$: Simple and affordable DIY projects

1. Your baby’s first steps in frame

Few milestones come close to your baby’s first steps (or at least the first few), and the owners of this BTO had a really sweet idea of immortalising the memory by framing up a poster of their baby’s footprints and placing it at their pantry.

2. Memories from your honeymoon

No kids, no problem. Apply the same concept to your first trip as a married couple by getting caricatures of yourselves on honeymoon (or any holiday as a couple, for that matter).

It’ll definitely also serve as a conversation starter with your guests when you’re making them a cuppa.

3. A cafe-style coffee menu on the wall

Speaking of coffee: if you ever dreamed of owning a cafe, the good news is you don’t need a lot of capital to feel like you own one. All you need are pegboard alphabets for a ‘menu’ on the wall and voilà!

4. A mood chart for your mental health

Mental health may be a key priority on Singapore’s national agenda, but it all starts at home.

Studies have shown that labelling our (charged) emotions can help to better regulate them, and as seen in this BTO, a simple reminder to do so daily is to have a chart of these emotions to identify what you’re feeling at any given time.

5. Hooks for your guitars

In this example of a junior bedroom-turned-music-studio, the owner made the decision to drill hooks into the wall for hanging his multiple guitars.

This not only maximises the use of vertical space in a tiny room, but also makes vacuuming/mopping the floors much easier since you don’t have to get the guitars out of the way when cleaning.

With projectors and sound systems more affordable than ever, you can take things a step further in creating that home theatre experience by framing your favourite movie posters along your walls.

P.S. Notice how the glass-enclosed home gym here is a play on the glass-enclosed box offices/ticketing counters you see in cinemas? Cute!

The possibilities are quite literally endless when it comes to customising neon lights to zhuzh up your space. If you’re in need of any ideas, steal some from these ones featuring family names at the entryway to cartoon characters in the bathroom.

8. A full-sized cat playground

Remember the excitement of going to an indoor playground as a kid? Well, your furbabies will feel the same if they have their own cat playground across an entire stretch of wall! And again, this won’t even take up any floor space, so what’s there to lose?

9. Add a practical pegboard by the door

PSA: pegboards are not just for study desks.

For the convenience of placing your daily carry and neatly storing your shoe horn, consider building a full-height one by your front door. There, you can even include a mini shoe rack for your toddlers’ shoes so they can find them easily.

Should you prefer something a little more elaborate, this quirky home at Farrer Park marries practicality with strong design language.

Beyond utilising the space under the stairs as cabinetry, the cabinet front also serves as a feature wall for decorative trinkets and open shelves.

11. A rock wall for your rambunctious young ones

If you’ve got active young ones at home, this next idea might save you a LOT of time putting them to sleep.

By installing a mini rock wall in their bedroom, they’ll get their fair share of fun and expend their energy before going to bed. Bonus: if you turn on the aircon, they won’t even break a sweat, which means you won’t need to shower them before tucking them in. You can thank us later.

12. A hotel-like bedhead that’s both gritty and classy

Bedheads are by and large standard; but every once in a while we come across works of art like these.

Extending out from the headboard, the owners of this hotel-like BTO used an artificial stone cladding that’s soft to the touch, pairing it with cove lighting for that luxe factor.

13. Replace your wall with display cabinets

Lastly, going a little left field with the idea of a feature wall, consider doing away with a wall altogether.

In areas like the study, consider replacing your walls with glass cabinets that can be used to display your collectibles in style. This also allows natural light to pass through for a more spacious feel, while giving you a level of privacy required to focus.
